Our Green Policy

Or, how we try to look after this planet we call home!

Big Ideas & Hopes

"Deciding to be environmentally conscious is not something you decide to do one day.  It's a choice you make on the first day and everyday thereafter.  Consistency is what makes it successful."

Consistency really is the key! It's so easy to say "Oh, we're eco-friendly", but sticking to it, and encouraging campers to do the same, is the difficult bit.  To us at Ferry View it's not something special, it's a way of life.  Our site and the surrounding area are stunning and we want to keep it that way, and help you to do the same.  Big gestures are fantastic, but consistently doing small things works too.  We all need to do our part - big or small.

"A beautiful environment starts with YOU!"

At Ferry View, we:

  • care about our community, our guests, our area and our planet;
  • understand we are the custodians of our natural environment and need to limit both our personal impact as well as the day to day impact of our campsite & cafe;
  • always aim to follow and promote good sustainability practices, reducing our impact on the environment (leave only footprints...) and give back to our community and the environment.

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle are words we live and work by here.

We'd like to list everything we do, but that would probably be very long and boring.  Instead, here are some of the things we do and if you want to know more, feel free to either get in touch or ask us when you are on site:

 We reduce our energy consumption by:- using LED lightbulbs wherever we can;

- using solar lights outdoors wherever possible;

- outside lights are on sensors;

- remind campers (and us!) to turn lights off;

- using highly energy efficient appliances;

- using a highly efficient heating system which is set on a timer.

 We reduce our water consumption by:- watering plants with rainwater wherever possible, and always in the evening;

- encouraging guests to ensure taps are turned off properly and use a washing bowl or fill the sink for washing up, rather than running the tap;

- encouraging campers to think about their water consumption.

We also encourage guests to reduce and recycle single use plastics wherever possible.  As a member of Refill, we encourage everyone to refill reusable bottles, rather than using single use bottles.

We try not sell anything in single use plastic, nor any single use plastic items.

Any plastic waste produced on site is either reused or recycled - nothing plastic is single use.

We reuse:

            - anything we can, giving new life to old objects which would otherwise be thrown away (check out Vikki's planter's by the toilet block!);

            - plants! We take cuttings from our own bushes and plants, and grow on new plants wherever possible;

            - waste from onsite refurbishments - scrap wood get's used by Vikki, whilst scrap metal Royston turn's into works of art:

            - by buying used or nearly new items, rather than new (although repair or make is our preferred option!).

We recycle:

             - glass, plastics, tins, paper & cardboard;

             - garden and vegetable waste is composted (for use on the veg patch) including food matter & packaging from the onsite takeaway and coffee grounds:

             - weeds and trimmings from landscaping (where they can't be used for new plants!):

             - takeaway coffee cups:

             - any waste from refurbishments on site.

Our Sustainability Policy

  1. We ensure we comply with all environmental regulations and legislation, whilst also making sure we stay up to date with changes in them and new legislation.
  2. We reduce our consumption of resources including energy, water and other raw materials whilst ensuring the resources we do use are used efficiently as possible.
  3. We ensure our purchasing of resources aligns with our environmental, social and ethical values, whilst also considering the impacts of our purchases.
  4. We work with our suppliers, wherever possible, to reduce the impact of our supply chain whilst encouraging and monitoring their improvements in sustainable and environmental practices.
  5. We manage our own waste generation in line with the waste hierarchy: Avoid waste in the first place, then prioritise minimising, reusing, recycling, recovery of waste, before then ensuring safe disposal of waste.
  6. We review our practices, aiming to continually minimise the impact of our business activities on the environment, the local community, wider society and the planet.
  7. We measure and take action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, directly or indirectly, associated with our business activities.
  8. We support social and environmental projects and initiatives within our business, our community and in the wider society.
